Keeping Your Colors Vivid
To keep your new clothes from fading and looking worn too soon, add a few dashes of salt to your wash cycle along with your detergent. Salt will help prevent the dyes in colored laundry loads from bleeding, thus keeping the color in the fabric. Depending on the size of the load, use up to 1/2 cup of salt. Adding salt to your wash load can also help brighten the once vivid colors in fading fabrics.
Must Have For Delicate Loads
Most of your delicate laundry can be done in the washing machine set on the gentle cycle even if the label says “hand wash only” with the use of a mesh laundry bag. Fine mesh bags with zippered enclosures work best. The fine mesh assures any hooks from undergarments won’t poke through and the zipper enclosure keeps your laundry secure in the bag. Be sure to fasten any hooks, snaps or zippers on your clothing so they don’t attach themselves to each other or snag your stockings. Wash the filled mesh bag separately with a mild detergent made for delicate clothes. Use cold water with your washer set on the gentle cycle and throw the bag in. Hang or lay your items flat to dry.
If you don’t feel comfortable washing your delicates in the washer and feel the need to hand wash, next time you take a shower, do your laundry too. Baby shampoo and some mild body washes work well as a substitute detergent for your delicate items. Lather, rinse, gently wring and hang to dry. Talk about killing two birds with one stone 🙂
Antiperspirant or Deodorant Stain Treatment
First of all, is the stain old or new. If it is an old stain, apply white vinegar and let sit for about 30 minutes. If it is new, apply ammonia and let sit for about 30 minutes. (Test ammonia in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.) Rinse from the fabric and apply a laundry prewash stain remover. Wash in the warmest water the fabric will allow. Always make sure any stain is out before drying. Repeat if necessary.
Iron a Little Quicker
Ironing is not usually the most loved chore. To make ironing go a little faster, put a piece of aluminum foil under your ironing board cover. The foil will reflect heat so you’re actually ironing from both sides of your garment at once.
Store Clothes With a Dryer Sheet
When putting your winter clothes in storage for the summer, throw a dryer sheet in with them. When you’re ready to get them out next winter they’ll smell like you just washed them! An extra bonus, spiders and bugs don’t like the smell of dryer sheets.
Keeping whites white is one of the toughest laundry issues we face. Try using a little Liquid Cascade Dishwasher Detergent in those really dingy loads. It takes out grass stains and colored dies from drinks and popsicles. Your whites will be brilliant!
